The RIVM has been designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Collaborating Centre for the WHO Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC) in the Netherlands. We perform this role on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS).

WHO classifications capture health, disease and care in a common language. This enables health data to be recorded, analysed and compared consistently, both within the Netherlands and internationally. On this site, you will find information about what the classifications entail, how to access them and under what conditions you may use them.

Three reference classifications

The WHO-FIC comprises three reference classifications – ICD, ICF and ICHI – each covering a different dimension of health. Together, they provide a standardized language for health information, enabling data on health, disease and care to be recorded, analysed and compared in a consistent way, both within the Netherlands and internationally.

What we do

As a Collaborating Centre, we contribute to the development and maintenance of the international health classifications. Through the WHO-FIC network, we participate in decision-making on their content and further evolution. We are also responsible for the Dutch translations, provide expert advice to users, and support the implementation of the classifications in the Netherlands.
